Gig Posters

Proposal

For my AS graphics final piece I am going to make a gig poster for a band I made up called ‘Golden Hour’, I chose to make a band instead of using a well known band as this way I can make them whatever genre I like and I can take it to another place rather than going with the theme the band has already made and trying to hit targets of what other people making posters for them have achieved.
My band 'Golden Hour' is a 60's rock band, as 60's rock really interests me and I am really looking forward to looking more into and finding out more information about 60's rock and how the posters were made. For my poster I am going to say they are performing at 'Brickway Auditorium' (which I also made) on the '3rd & 4th August 2012' at '9:00pm'.
I am really looking forward to designing a poster in this style that interests me so much.

Plan for Final

This is a rough outline of what my final piece will be based on. I am aware some parts of this poster are difficult to read and the poster itself looks a bit 'bland' almost. However I am now working to try and make  it really stand out and make the reader want to come to my bands performance.

Unit Evaluation

Throughout the start of the year my AS Graphics group and I learnt a lot of impressive skills, such as making a no staples book, or producing our own John Porcellino King-Cat. At the start of the year I wasn't very confident with my skills as an artist or graphic designer, however now I feel loads more confident, and feel I have produced some amazing things throughout my time as a Graphics student.
Slightly later in the year we had to start planning our Unit 1 coursework, we got given a topic that we had to produce either a 'Gig Poster' or a 'Movie Poster'. As I am into music a lot more than I am into films I decided to make a Gig Poster. As I didn't want mine to be an existing/famous band, I decided to focus it on one of the village bands that I know and go and what perform sometimes. My inital idea was my Dad's band 'The Mighty Lashes', after alot of deliberation I decided against this idea as they weren't really performing anymore and it would have been hard to get any images of them performing. I then thought of a friends band 'This is Two' who have done a lot of support work for people such as 'Tinchy Stryder' etc. They are all still studying at LIPA university. As this is where they are based I again decided against this idea as it would be very difficult to get to Liverpool. I then thought, what if I made up my own band, as this way I could make it any kind of band that suits me and get people I know at college to help me out with the images. As 60's rock bands really interest me and have done for some time, I really wanted to focus on this as I've always wanted to learn more about it anyway and this would be the perfect opportunity. I then went on to research into 60's rock more and got together some Iconography.
Durning my time of research I found many amazingly talented artist who also focused mainly on 60's rock, poeple such as, Wes Wilson and Darren Grealish. As I previously said, as I am not very confident with my style of art, I much prefered to work on Illustrator or Photoshop, where I was able to get the colours and contrast perfect, also having the text managable and being able to change it to where ever I wanted whenever I wanted without having the worry about ruining the work. For the main part of my experimentation, I used the what I had done for my artist copies. I worked in ink as that is what many of the artists working at the time used. I liked this method alot as I felt it alot easier to work in that than paint. I also feel as many artist used it at the time, it was best for my topic too.
For my final piece I decided to make a poster for my own band 'Golden Hour' whereby I had made up a venue, date, and time. I decided to make up all my own stuff as I feel this way I would be able to twist and bend it into any way I wanted and really make it my own, which I feel I achieved very well. If I were to change anything for my Final piece I would probably add a few more personal details into it, such as drawn images to do with 60's rock. Although I did not get in everything I hoped for I still feel it worked well and I am happy with the way it looks.
